Open-Source software powers the world—but why are so many of these great tools hidden in the shadows? Sure, Open-Source design apps like Blender, GIMP, and to a lesser degree, Krita have earned their place in the spotlight, but many others don’t get the recognition they deserve. Often, it's not because of their functionality—but because of how they’re presented.
We’re here to change that. An Open-Source app can be just as powerful as its proprietary counterparts, but if its public image—its website, branding, name, or documentation—is outdated or unpolished, it may never gain the traction it deserves.
Our work on Pinta’s website reflects a larger vision: helping make Open-Source the first choice, not just the alternative. The new site is now live, but before you head over, we’d like to share a few insights we believe add important context. You’ll find the link at the end of this article.
Pinta: Powerful, Yet Underrated
Pinta is an Open-Source image editing app, inspired by Paint.NET. It offers a powerful set of tools within a simplified interface, making it an excellent choice for quick edits and lightweight graphic work. With features like unlimited undo, layer effects, and a clone tool, Pinta is perfect for designers and photographers at all levels.
However, Pinta’s previous online presence didn’t reflect its full potential. Like many Open-Source projects, its focus had been more on function than form. While the app worked great, its website lacked the polished, modern appeal that could attract a wider audience. That's where we came in.
Our goal was simple:
- Keep it functional.
- Ensure a cohesive visual identity.
- Incorporate modern usability features.
- Make it fully responsive.
- Create a polished, inviting user experience.
Bringing Pinta’s Website to Life
Our approach was clear: make Pinta’s website as modern, responsive, and visually appealing as the app itself. Here’s how we did it:
A Cohesive Visual Experience
We designed the site with a familiar yet fresh layout, aligning it with trends in graphic design and photography while staying true to Pinta’s unique identity. We integrated elements from both Pinta’s existing brand and the broader Open-Source ecosystem to create a seamless experience.

Typography
We selected Open-Source fonts that balance uniqueness and readability. These fonts align with Pinta’s sleek and functional style while ensuring an enjoyable reading experience. Our selections include:
- Inter for body text.
- Baumans for buttons and headings.
- Jost for the navigation menu.
Color Palette & Branding
A key feature in brand representation is color—and we translated Pinta's logo colors into a palette that reflects both its simplicity and its potential. By blending consistency with a touch of novelty, this color scheme embodies the subtle power that sets Pinta apart.
Adaptability & Accessibility
We believe form and function are two sides of the same coin—just as aesthetics and user experience go hand in hand. To this end, we've ensured that Pinta’s website is fully responsive, and offers both light and dark modes — easily toggled from the site menu.
Optimized for Speed and Usability
Great design is about more than aesthetics—it needs to perform. We optimized Pinta’s website for fast load times and smooth navigation. Whether browsing from a desktop or a mobile phone, users land on a seamless experience.
Well-organized sites not only look better—they enhance user onboarding and encourage greater engagement. That's why we've streamlined the site's structure and visual hierarchy, providing users quick to access downloads, documentation, and community resources, without breaking compatibility with existing link structure.
Dynamic Content & Simplified Maintenance
Maintaining an Open-Source project is no small task. To ease the workload, we built the site with dynamic content loading, allowing the Pinta team to automatically pull in the latest updates. This reduces maintenance time and ensures the site always reflects the latest information.
Additionally, this work ensures that users have quick access to the correct downloads and information for their platform, automatically pulling from Pinta's latest stable releases and pointing to the correct online app stores for relevant platforms.
